Man Wanted For Allegedly Firing Shots At JPD Officers

JACKSON, Miss. -- Jackson police were searching Friday for a man who allegedly fired shots at officers.

Lt. Jeffery Scott had said Friday that Bowman was captured Thursday night -- but was able to get away by stealing a police car. Scott said later that the car was stolen by another man -- Robert Brown -- and not by Bowman.

Bowman is wanted on three counts of aggravated assault, police said.

Police said that at about 3 p.m. Thursday, police were called to the Palisades area after Bowman allegedly hit a woman in the face with a brick, Vance said. The woman was transported to a local hospital. Her condition was not immediately known.

Once officers arrived on Shirley Avenue, they began speaking to Bowman, Vance said. Bowman pulled out a gun and shot at the officers twice, police said. Police fired back, but missed, Vance said.

The officers thought Bowman had run into a house in the 1600 block of Shirley Drive, Vance said. The SWAT team was called and surrounded the house.

Police tried to communicate with Bowman using a bullhorn. After about 90 minutes, police went inside the house, but didn't find Bowman inside. Police also searched the area, but didn't find Bowman.

Bowman is described as a 27-year-old black man, who is 5 feet 9 inches tall, and weighing 200 pounds, Vance said. He was last seen wearing dark clothing. Vance said police weren't sure if Bowman was still armed. Bowman faces two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer and third count of aggravated assault related to the attack on the woman.

Shirley Avenue is a few streets away from Jackson State University and near where a Jackson State University student was shot by an apparent stray bullet earlier this week.

JSU golfer Brett Benson was shot in the shoulder on Tuesday while driving on Morehouse Avenue. Benson was treated and released from University Medical Center and is recovering from his injury.

Police weren't sure if the two incidents are related, Vance said
