The Jackson County Sheriffs Department has recovered a patrol
car stolen early Saturday morning.

The theft occurred when a deputy arrested a man for shoplifting
at an adult book store at 8401 Truman Road in Blue Summit.

Col. Tom Phillips of the Sheriff's Department said the car was
recovered in the 6600 block of Bennington Avenue. "They found it
in a wooded area near Worlds of Fun," Phillips said.

The car was stolen when the deputy put the suspect in handcuffs,
with his hands behind his back, and left him the back seat of
the patrol car. The deputy then went back into the store. The
man somehow got his hands in front of himself, crawled through
the open window of the car's prisoner cage and drove off. The
deputy had left the keys in the ignition.

Phillips said he didn't know if the keys to the handcuffs were
on the same key ring with the ignition key. He said having the
keys on the same ring is a common practice.

The suspect is described as a white man 22 to 25 years old,
5-foot-10, with a slender build. Police do not have the suspect's
name, as the suspect recovered his identification while making off
with the patrol car.
