A pair of Iowa City plain-clothes police officers ended up with a little more than they bargained for after pulling over in their unmarked car to break up a fight.
According to a complaint filed in
Johnson County District Court, officers pulled over shortly before 1:30 a.m.
today at Dubuque and Washington streets to break up a fight. When the
officers got out of the car, another man not associated with the fight got into
their car and "appeared to be attempting to drive it away," according to the
complaint.
The man in the car smelled strongly of alcohol, police said, and had bloodshot
and watery eyes. He wasn't able to drive off in the car, but he refused to
get out of the vehicle when officers ordered him to do so.
They ended up pulling him out of the car, and the man consented to a field
sobriety test, which police say he failed.
Police arrested George Athaniasios Halkias, 24, of 820 E. Burlington St., on
charges of operating while intoxicated, operating a vehicle without the owner's
consent and interference with official acts.
