Police Car Stolen During Traffic Stop

Car Found Crashed; Man Arrested

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - The Kansas City Channel

October 8, 2000-- A 33 year-old Independence man
was arrested early Sunday morning and accused of
stealing a police car.

An officer was conducting a sobriety test at Winner Road
and Ash Boulevard in Independence around 1 a. m., when
another driver allegedly pulled over. The officer said
that a man in the car got out and demanded that the
officer release the possible intoxicated driver.

The officer ordered the man who had gotten out of the
car to leave the area, however he refused, police said.
He continued toward the officer with his hand in his pocket.
The officer said that he then took a position of cover
behind his car and told the man to stop.

The man refused again and got into the driver's seat of
the officer's car and drove away before the officer
could stop him, according to police.

A few minutes later, the car was found wrecked a few
miles down the road. The man who allegedly stole the
car had left the scene.
