Former Huntsville, Alabama Police Chief left keys in SUV, auto was stolen

Thursday, June 14th, 2005

Former Huntsville police chief Compton Owens investigated his share of stolen car cases during his 27 years on the force, many times telling citizens that they simply cannot leave their keys inside their cars. Apparently, he forgot to follow his own advice Tuesday afternoon, resulting in his own SUV disappearing from a convience store parking lot.

According to police, Owens left his keys in his car as he went into the store to buy a soft drink, and turned around to see a woman driving it away from the parking lot. The vehicle was recovered about two hours later
