The incident happened around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at Eastex Freeway and Plaag.
According to police, officers responded to a car that smashed into a wall at the 4400 block of the North Freeway. After the officers arrived, they went to check out the accident when two men jumped out of the wrecked car. One man ran from the scene while the other jumped into the nearest police car and drove off.
Because the car had GPS, a police helicopter was able to track the suspect’s movements. As the suspect took the Laura Koppe exit ramp, he smashed into the back of a pickup truck containing six people. Police said a grandmother was taken to the hospital with a head injury.
After hitting the pickup truck, the suspect jumped out of the stolen police car and attempted to run across the freeway, where he was caught on the other side.
He remains in custody.
