An off-duty Harris County reserve deputy constable fired shots early Tuesday
morning at a thief driving off with his car, Houston police said.
The deputy, 37-year-old A. Soto, was in his home just before 1 a.m. when he saw
his car being stolen from his driveway in the 3700 block of Meyer. Soto ran
outside, identified himself as an officer and ordered the man to stop, according
to a police report.
When the thief continued to flee, Soto fired several shots, but the car
didn't stop. Police have not found the car, or the thief, and do not know if the
bullets hit either of them.
Because Soto fired his gun, Precinct 6 Constable Victor Trevino's office will
conduct an internal investigation, but have not taken any disciplinary action,
said constable's spokesman Danny Perez. Soto will be assigned to administrative
duties pending the outcome of the investigation, Perez said. Soto has been with
the department for about three years.
