By ABC 11 Eyewitness News - Brian Shrader

(03/11/05 -- HOPE MILLS)Cumberland County deputies got into a high-speed chase with one of their own cruisers.

It happened around 4:30 p.m. Friday in Hope Mills. They say Robert Reed, 21, of Hope Mills, was behind the wheel after he stole the cruiser.

Deputies say it all started when they tried to pull over Reed in his own car. Authorities say he led them on a chase. Reed later crashed on Church Street. The wreck threw him from the car, which rolled on top of him.

Reed got up and began running on foot, deputies say. A few minutes later, he came back to the scene, where authorities say Reed hopped into a deputy's empty cruiser and sped off.

Deputies say they caught up with Reed a short time later and arrested him. He had to be treated at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center for injuries he received in the crash.

Reed is in jail, facing numerous charges.
