HELENA (AP) — Two 15-year-old girls left a psychiatric hospital Friday
afternoon, stole a police car that was parked outside and led officers on a
45-mile chase at speeds up to 90 mph before being stopped by a spike strip in
Toston.
The police officer whose car was stolen from outside the Shodair Children’s
Hospital was dropping off a patient from another city around 1 p.m.
The teens face felony charges of theft of a motor vehicle and additional charges
related to eluding officers and traffic violations from the chase, said Helena
Police Lt. Corey Livesay. Their names have not been released.
After taking the car, the girls traveled east on U.S. 12. Members of the
Helena and East Helena police, the Broadwater and Lewis and Clark county
sheriff’s offices and the Montana Highway Patrol pursued the teens.
The stolen car reached speeds of about 90 miles per hour, Livesay said.
After rolling over ‘‘stop sticks’’ put out near the Toston Bridge by the highway
patrol, the car careened into an embankment, he said. The girls were
apprehended.
