HARTFORD, Conn. -- A 27-year-old East Hartford man is in police custody on a
$600,000 bond after a Friday morning crash and foot chase in which he tried to
take a police car and a tow truck, police said.
Police said they say Llamar McCarthy operating a Dodge Charger erratically and
ignore a traffic signal at about 4 a.m. and started following the car. McCarthy
jumped a median, skidded, jumped a curve and hit the wall before the Charger
stopped l under the overpass on Windsor Avenue just off Interstate 91 in
Hartford’s North End.
McCarthy then got out of the car, ran and tried to steal a locked police
cruiser as well as a tow truck, police said.
“(The officer) was just patrolling, saw the single car crash on Windsor Street
and the guy’s behavior was beyond societal norm,” said Lt. Patrick Jobes of
Hartford Police. “I guess you could say he kind of went berserk.”
Several officers subdued the man and took him into custody after a foot pursuit.
Inside the car, police found a handgun and ski mask, police said.
Police are investigating whether the car was stolen. Sources tell NBC 30 that
the man was under the influence of a controlled substance.
Emergency room personnel evaluated the man at the scene.
McCarthy faces both carjacking and weapons charges.
