Tuesday, September 12, 2000  - Hannibal, MO

An investigation is continuing at the Hannibal Police
Department (HPD) of an incident Thursday night in which
a police car was stolen after the keys had been left in the
car. The car was quickly recovered a few blocks from where
it was stolen, after the car thief had driven it off and hit
some parked cars.

Edward King, 36, of 611 Church St., was arrested soon after
the incident. He has been charged with auto theft, leaving the
scene of an accident and driving while intoxicated.

No disciplinary action has been taken regarding the officer who
drove the car to the location from which it was stolen, according to
the police department. However, the investigation is not completed.

The following report of the incident was made by the police
officers involved. It began at 10:49 p.m. Thursday, when the
police were called to a fight in progress at a home in the 800
block of Fulton Avenue.

The police car, a 1999 Ford Victoria, was stolen from where it
had been parked. It was driven south on Fulton Avenue, and it hit
two vehicles that were parked in the 1600 block of Fulton Avenue.
Two cars owned by George Reynolds, 1605 Fulton Ave., were damaged.

The suspect then fled from the vehicle and was arrested a short time
later, according to the police. The police reported King was a passenger
in another vehicle when he was arrested, and he was still in the city
limits.
