A Hampton, VA man is facing multiple charges after officials say he stole a Newport News police cruiser

A Hampton man is facing multiple charges after officials say he stole a Newport News police cruiser early Thursday morning.
According to authorities, they responded to the 6100 block of Jefferson Avenue in Newport News just after 5:00am after receiving a call about an auto/pedestrian accident.
Police say 36-year old Alphonso Lee Williams was running in and out of traffic when he was struck by a Ford F-150 pickup.
When officers arrived on the scene, officials say Williams assaulted one of the officers then jumped into a police vehicle and drove down Jefferson Avenue at a high rate of speed.
Police say they lost sight of Williams, but soon received a phone call from David Mayo in the 4900 block of Madison Avenue.
According to Mayo, Williams simply entered his home through his front door - which Mayo had opened to help cool his kitchen after getting an early start on Thanksgiving food preparations.
Mayo says Williams just sat on the couch and even asked to use the phone. Mayo used his cell phone to contact police.
Officers arrived and arrested Williams, who lives in the 300 block of Thomas Street in Hampton, without incident. He is charged with two counts of felony assault on a police officer, as well as single counts of reckless driving, grand larceny, burglary, and operating a motor vehicle after being declared a habitual offender.
The officer was treated at the hospital for a minor arm injury.
Williams is being held without bond at the Newport News City Jail.
