Police car stolen in wild chase

A 17-YEAR-OLD Hampton, N.H. youth who
allegedly stole a police cruiser led state and
local police on a wild, bullet-punctuated chase
yesterday through several towns in the Exeter,
N.H. area.
During the chase, the driver of the stolen
cruiser tried to run down two officers and hit
another police car. The chase finally ended when
the cruiser, with two of its tires blown out by
police bullets, crashed into a tree.
The youth, taken into custody by police,
will be arraigned today in Exeter District
Court as a juvenile on a variety of charges.
Col. Paul O'Leary, director of N.H. State
Police, said the incident began with a one-car
accident on Rte. 128 in Newmarket.
While the Newmarket Police were investigating,
the juvenile hopped into an empty cruiser and
roared away at 7:22 a.m.
He was spotted next in Exeter allegedly barreling
along narrow Rte. 111A at speeds up to 85 m.p.h.
