Greensboro, NC - Robber Chased at 100 MPH - Crash - Steals Police K-9 Unit - Drags/Injures Officer - Suspect Shot Dead in K-9 Unit

 

Warrant: Officer Dragged After Suspect Hijacked Patrol Car A police vehicle sits in the Interstate 40 median Wednesday after a chase.



 

 

GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) -- The suspect fatally shot by an off-duty police officer after a high speed chase jumped into the officer's vehicle and dragged the officer, according to a State Bureau of Investigations search warrant.

Greensboro police officer William Symmes chased Emile Baptist Williams through the parking lot of Four Seasons Town Centre after the store manager at Helzberg Diamonds reported a theft. According to the warrant, Williams stole at least two diamond rings valued at $14,400 and $21,800.

Eventually, Williams got into his car and Symmes followed in his police-issued K-9 unit SUV.

According to police, the ensuing chase reached speeds up to 100 mph. The chase ended when Williams and Symmes collided along I-85 south of the Randleman Rd. exit.

According to the warrant, the two then engaged in a physical altercation in which the suspect jumped into the officer's patrol vehicle. While attempting to stop the suspect, Symmes was dragged a short distance by the vehicle.

According to the search warrant, Symmes, unable to stop the vehicle, drew his weapon and shot Williams in the neck area.

Williams died from his injuries. Symmes was injured and taken to Moses Cone Memorial Hospital where he was treated and released
