A Grass Valley man who reportedly jumped in front of vehicles ended up in jail after allegedly trying to drive away in a California Highway Patrol car.
A CHP officer responded to a call at Highway 49 near Old Downieville Highway at about 6:45 p.m. Sunday concerning a man jumping in front of vehicles. The man, identified as Erik Johnathan Dellsite, 23, was standing in the road, shouting and flailing his arms, said CHP spokesman Marc Morrison.
Earlier dispatch reports, starting at about 5 p.m., reported a man throwing branches and rocks at passing vehicles in the area of Cement Hill Road and then Newtown Road; it was not clear if those incidents also involved Dellsite.
Dellsite became physically aggressive and refused to comply with the officer's directions, Morrison said.
The officer tried to deploy his Taser, but it malfunctioned, Morrison said, adding that a “lengthy struggle” ensued.
“At one point, Dellsite pulled away and jumped into the passenger side of the patrol car, and attempted to put the vehicle into drive,” Morrison said.
A second CHP officer arrived on scene and helped forcibly remove Dellsite from the patrol car, and he was handcuffed after another struggle.
Dellsite was taken to Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released for minor to moderate injuries. He was booked into county jail on suspicion of battery on a peace officer, attempted theft of a patrol vehicle, damage to a patrol vehicle, and resisting arrest. He was being held in lieu of $16,500 bail.
