Suspect Steals Glynn County Squad Car, Leads GA State Police On Chase
POSTED: 12:52 pm EDT September 15, 2004
WOODBINE, Ga. -- Authorities stopped a forgery suspect Wednesday who they
said used a stolen Glynn County, Ga., police car to try to escape after his
arrest.
Police said Shannon Tanner, 31, was placed in custody about noon at a tool store on Community Road in Brunswick, handcuffed and put in the back seat of a patrol car. Tanner was able to get his arms from behind his back, allowing him to jimmy the sliding-glass partition. He then reportedly climbed into the front of the car and drove away.
Another officer spotted the squad car on Spur 25 and chased it onto I-95 southbound, where the GSP joined the pursuit.
Police said Tanner tried to avoid the stop sticks set up four miles north of the Woodbine exit by Camden County Sheriff's deputies. He lost control of the car and crashed into the woods.
The whole chase took about 15 minutes.
After the wreck, Tanner complained of injuries to his side and was taken to a hospital to be checked out.
Beside the forgery charges, Tanner will be charged with motor vehicle theft along with other charges to be determined.
