Stolen Police car runs into officer, suspect charged with attempted murder

The Fremont police report that a burglary suspect stole an
unmarked police car ran over an investigating officer and
then lead them on a high speed chase into Hayward, where he
was arrested.

Police say 40-year-old Jose Anibal Rodriguez of San Leandro has
been booked on charges of attempted murder of a police officer,
assault with a deadly weapon on an peace officer, residential
burglary, evading arrest and auto theft.

Detective Chuck Uhler, who was struck when Rodriguez pulled
forward in the police car, had injuries on both hands that
required stitches and cuts on his face.

Another officer, Jeremy Miskella, also suffered minor injuries
to several fingers while arresting Rodriguez and was treated
with Uhler at Washington Hospital.

Police report that the incident began when Uhler went to
investigate a report of a burglary in progress at 3 p.m.
yesterday at an apartment complex at 4212 Lorren Drive.

Uhler spotted Rodriguez and began chasing the suspect, grabbing
his legs as he tried to jump over a fence. The suspect resisted
violently, according to police, escaped and jumped into the
police car.

He then backed into a light pole, pulled forward striking the
detective and speeded off. Uhler fired a shot at the fleeing car.

Fremont police and the East Bay Regional Park helicopter chased
the stolen police car up Interstate 880 at speeds of up to 85 miles an
hour to Decoto Road, where the suspect began driving into oncoming
traffic, officers said.

He continued on I-880 into Hayward, where he struck a car with a
woman and two children inside. Police said they then trapped
Rodriguez  in a court off  Huntwood Street, where he rammed another
police car and attempted to run away before being subdued by two
officers.
