A hearing is scheduled today for a Westmoreland County waterman facing several felony charges stemming from an incident in which a deputy's cruiser was stolen.
Westmoreland Sheriff C.O. Balderson said dispatchers received complaints last Wednesday about an orange Chevrolet Camaro being driven recklessly along State Route 202 in the Mount Holly area. Deputy Antwan Smith spotted the vehicle crossing the yellow lines and turned on his flashing lights.
The driver didn't stop, and Smith chased the Camaro about a mile to a home on Fisherman's Lane, Balderson said.
The driver walked toward the deputy and pointed a gun at him, Balderson said. The deputy then drew his weapon and walked into some woods behind his vehicle to take cover. No shots were fired.
Balderson said the driver got into the patrol car, made some comments on the police radio, then attempted to drive the car out of the long driveway.
The driver then drove back up the driveway and went into the house. Balderson said he called the driver on the phone, and after a brief conversation, the man walked out of the home and was arrested.
Clarence William "Juice" McKenney, 66, is charged with attempted capital murder of a law-enforcement officer, brandishing a firearm, resisting arrest, grand larceny, reckless driving, attempting to elude police, using police radio during a crime and obstruction of justice.
A search warrant was executed at the home, and two firearms were seized.
"Based on the actions that the deputy took, it certainly saved a situation that was bad from becoming a tragedy," Balderson said.
McKenney is being held in Northern Neck Regional Jail without bond.
He is scheduled for an arraignment this morning in Westmoreland General District Court.
Deputy Smith was placed on administrative leave pending the investigation, Balderson said.
