Shooting suspect steals cop car
An early morning shooting suspect who didn't want to go to jail tried to
drive away wearing handcuffs in a police car, but didn't get very far.
Evansville Police responded to a shooting at 206 Jefferson Street.
The 19-year-old who lives there says two men she's never seen before knocked on
the door just after 2:00 a.m. asking for a man.
When she told them he wasn't there, she says they shot her in the leg.
She was treated and released from the hospital.
Four hours later, police cornered the two men at an apartment building a few
blocks away.
They say after they arrested Quentin Phipps, handcuffed him and put him in
the back of one of their cruisers, he managed to jump into the front seat while
an officer's back was turned.
They say he drove down an alley so fast that when he crossed Second Street and
attempted to turn on Howard Street, he lost control of the vehicle and slammed
into a light pole and a parked car.
He got out and ran away.
Police found him later hiding in someone's garden where they arrested him again.
