ELKO, NV - A Spring Creek man accused of stealing
a deputy's vehicle Saturday was served some poetic
justice Thursday when that same deputy helped to arrest him.
John Mclean Tilley, 37, allegedly took Deputy Carl Cox's
vehicle after Cox attempted to stop Tilley and pursued
him in a foot chase.
Tilley was arrested Thursday in an alley behind Capriola's
on charges of resisting officers, battery with a deadly weapon,
assault with a deadly weapon, stolen vehicle, malicious
destruction of county property and various traffic violations,
including failure to stop and yield for a sign, failure to stop
for a red light, passing on right, failure to maintain travel
lane, passing in no-passing zones, reckless driving, failure
to yield, driving with a suspended license and speeding.
Bail was set at $22,645
Tilley was spotted at 1 p.m. Thursday in a pawn shop near
Fifth and Idaho streets by Sgt. Mike Kolsch of the Elko
County Sheriff's Office.
Kolsch, who was on medical leave, followed Tilley in his
vehicle and called dispatch on his cell phone. FBI agent
Jack Salisbury also kept officers updated on Tilley's
location over his radio.
Tilley saw Kolsch following him and took off running,
said Lt. Bill Cunningham.
Tilley was spotted at Fifth and Silver streets, where he
ran north on Fifth and turned east in the alley behind
Capriola's. Cunningham followed Tilley on foot.
"A pickup was in the alley. I motioned for the man to
open his door to block the alley," Cunningham said.
"It pushed (Tilley) up against the chain-link fence."
Cunningham, Cox and Deputy Billy Hood took down Tilley,
who attempted to fight the deputies, according to reports.
Elko police also assisted by helping to surround Tilley.
