EDMONTON - A 19-year-old man initially wanted for kicking over garbage cans
quickly wracked up a string of charges Sunday after allegedly jumping into the
seat of a police cruiser and hitting an officer.
The incident began around 6:20 p.m. when Spruce Grove RCMP received a complaint
that two intoxicated men were kicking over garbage cans in a back alley.
An RCMP officer and two Spruce Grove municipal enforcement peace officers
quickly found the men.
A 19-year-old with no fixed address in Spruce Grove was arrested for causing a
disturbance while the other man fled.
The man was put into the back of the RCMP cruiser while officers searched for
the second suspect.
He then allegedly climbed through the open window of the shield separating the
front and back seats of the cruiser and hopped into the driver’s seat before
trying to drive away.
“The police officer was (also) in there trying to get him to stop,” said Const.
Barb Roy, with Spruce Grove/Stony Plain RCMP.
But before the cop could intervene, the car plowed into a parked vehicle,
pushing that vehicle forward, hitting a peace officer and knocking him to the
ground.
He received minor cuts and bruises.
The man then allegedly physically assaulted another peace officer while
officials were trying to apprehend him again.
That officer also received minor injuries.
Police managed to take the man into custody. They also tracked down the man who
initially fled.
He was arrested, but released without charges.
Police have charged Mitchell Robert Sydlowski, 19, with two counts of assaulting
a peace officer, causing a disturbance in a public place, escaping lawful
custody, theft over $5,000, impaired driving, refusal to comply with breath
demand and dangerous driving.
He remains in custody and will appear in Stony Plain Provincial Court on June 9
