An undercover police officer lost his footing — then lost his car which later
crashed into a fire truck — after a suspect he was questioning tried to escape
Tuesday afternoon.
The incident began around 1 p.m. in the north-end community of Caernarvon, when
the officer in an unmarked police car spotted a young man wanted for questioning
in relation to some “suspicious” activity in the neighborhood, police said.
After getting out of the vehicle to speak to the man, the officer was thrown
to the ground and the man jumped into his car and drove off.
The suspect crashed into a fire truck at 142nd Avenue and 113A Street.
The suspect then fled on foot but was arrested a short time later at 132 Avenue
near 127 Street.
Christopher Despins, 22, has been charged with robbery, possession of stolen
property over $5,000, hit and run, dangerous driving, and two counts of
assaulting a peace officer.
