Assault charges have been laid against a cop accused of kicking the head of a man suspected of stealing her unmarked car.

The cop was searching for a robber in the Castledowns area when the 24-year-old suspect ran off with the police cruiser.

A time later, two other cops found the suspect near 132 Avenue and 127 Street.

"It is alleged the suspect was kicked in the head by a female officer while the two other officers were in the process of arresting the man," said Edmonton Police Service spokesman Dean Parthenis.

The man wasn't seriously injured.

A complaint was filed by a person described only as an "EPS employee".

Parthenis wasn't able to confirm yesterday whether that employee was one of the arresting officers.

The suspect, whose name has not been released by police, has been charged with robbery, assaulting a peace officer and assault causing bodily harm.

The police officer who has been charged has not been suspended.

Const. Celia Frattin, 38, is slated to appear in court on Sept. 5 at 9 a.m.
