EDMONTON, CANADA

Charges were laid Tuesday against three men after two RCMP officers were run down by one of their own cruisers the night before.

Gary Reber, 35, of Edmonton, faces 11 charges, including criminal negligence causing bodily harm and aggravated assault. Roger Johnson, 30, and Christopher Warren, 27, both of Edmonton, were charged with one count each of possession of stolen property.

Const. Fleming Kaastrup, 38, of the Leduc detachment, and Cpl. Steve Daley, 43, from the Beaumont detachment – both south of Edmonton -- were hurt Monday when they pulled over a camper-van after receiving a phone call about a suspicious vehicle.

While the officers were dealing with two men in the van, a third man jumped into one of the officer’s cars and sped away.

Both officers were struck by the vehicle, suffering broken bones and other non-life-threatening injuries.

About 20 police officers were called in on a manhunt for the suspect. Several hours later they converged on a residence near Fort Saskatchewan where a man had barged into the home while the occupants, a woman and a child, fled.

After several hours of negotiation, a suspect surrendered peacefully.
