EAST ORANGE -- City police were searching for an unmarked police car that was stolen from in front of a deputy chief's house Sunday morning.

Sgt. Andrew Di Elmo said that the deputy chief had parked and locked the black 2008 Ford Crown Victoria in front of his house on McKay Avenue near the Newark border. He observed the car around 9:45 a.m. Sunday, Di Elmo said, and 45 minutes later, it was gone.

Di Elmo said the car has no tracking device on it, but it contains a police radio and computer.

Police have responded to alleged sightings of the car in Hillside, East Orange, Irvington and other cities, but have not located it.

The car has a New Jersey license place with the number VCL46M. Anyone with information should contact the East Orange Crime Tips hotline at (973)266-5041
