August 14, 2004 (East Chicago, IN) - Police in northwest Indiana say a suspect who took off with a police squad car Saturday night led them on a wild chase that ended in a collision with another police vehicle and a shootout with officers.
It happened Saturday night in East Chicago.
Police were called to a house there where shots were reported fired.
Officers say the alleged gunmen took off in a car then ran off on foot.
During the chase police say he somehow got into one of their police vehicles then ran head on into another squad car that was trying to head him off.
Police say the suspect pulled a gun and started shooting at officers. One of those officers shot him and he was arrested.
Police later discovered the body of a man in the house where the original disturbance was reported.
Police say the scene was chaotic and they are not sure how the suspect ended up with one of their vehicles.
The suspect was taken to a local hospital - no word on his condition.
He is has not yet been charged.
