Suspect Still At Large
DETROIT, Updated 7:23 p.m. EDT June 28, 2000

Detroit police are looking for a man who stole
an unmarked police car Wednesday on the city's east side.

Police were following a man they suspected was
driving a stolen car. The officers stopped the suspect
in the 3900 block of Outer Drive in the parking lot of
a Super Kmart.

When police
attempted to arrest
the man, a struggle
ensued and the
suspect was able
to jump into
a burgundy
unmarked police
car and flee.
The suspect tried to run over one of the
officers as he drove away.

Officers said they fired shots into the vehicle in self
defense. The man crashed the stolen police cruiser a
few blocks away at Savage Street, and fled on foot.

There was no indication that the man was wounded.
Neither of the officers involved was injured.

The suspect was still at large early Wednesday evening.
