A 25 year-old Detroit man was wounded by a
Michigan State Police trooper Thursday morning after the
man had stolen the officer's patrol car and tried to escape,
police said.

The suspect, who was shot in the back, was listed in stable
condition at Detroit Receiving Hospital.

The incident happened shortly after 9 a.m. when two troopers
spotted the man driving a stolen conversion van at Interstate
94 and Junction, on the city's southwest side, investigators
said.

The troopers pulled over the van and arrested the suspect.
They handcuffed the alleged thief's hands behind his back
and put him into the police car on the back seat while
they checked out the van, investigators said.

The suspect got his hands in front of himself,
jumped over the seat and drove off in a police car.

The troopers jumped into the stolen van and chased
the man a short distance on Interstate 94. One of the
troopers fired one shot and the bullet blew out the
rear window, went through the head rest and lodged in
the man's back

The suspect, still handcuffed, was rearrested and was
being held at the hospital as a police prisoner pending charges.
