Iowa Man trying to Steal Police Car apprehended with help of Police Dog
Des Moines, August 24th, 2005-
A man is behind bars now, after a police dog played the role of hero in an overnight car chase in Des Moines.
When an officer showed up to check out a fight in Drake Park, a car sped off. The officer followed him to the Kum and Go at 22nd and University. Witnesses say the man sped through the parking lot, knocking over a dumpster. He then tried to turn around. That's when the officer blocked him and the man ran into the police car. Police tell us the officer's dog helped him subdue the man until other officers got there, but witnesses say he was still fighting even then.
Leslie Allison, who saw the accident says, "He tried to fight the police to keep them from pulling him out of the car. He was kicking the cop with his feet and stuff to try to keep from getting taken down, so they just pulled him out and maced him and they had him on the ground."
The police dog involved in this arrest was Reno. You probably remember him as the dog that was shot during a chase last year.
