A brief joyride in a Dane County sheriff's squad car early
Friday ended with the arrest of a Milwaukee teen-ager.

Antoine Maclin, 17, was jailed on car theft charges after
he crashed a stolen care then drove off with the squad car
belonging to the sheriff's deputy sent to investigate the
accident, said Lt. Larry Lathrop of the Dane County Sheriffs
Office.

Deputy Jeff  Thiel was sent to Highway 14 in the
town of Oregon about 1 a.m., where a car was reported
to have left the road. When he arrived, he said he
found Maclin standing behind the car, moving things
around in the trunk.

As Thiel questioned Maclin about what happened, Maclin
turned away from the car and started to amble slowly
toward Thiel squad car. Thiel told Maclin to stop, and
Maclin ran to the squad car, jumped in and started to
drive away, overhead emergency lights still flashing.
Thiel hung onto the door handle until he was dragged.
He called for help on his portable radio, and Oregon
police set up a roadblock on Highway 14 near Highway MM.

Maclin stopped at the roadblock, jumped out of the car
and ran from officers. He was caught after his clothes
became snagged on barbed wire as he tried to climb a fence.

The 1994 Pontiac Sunbird that Maclin had been driving was
stolen earlier from the parking lot of the Sheraton Hotel,
706 John Nolen Drive, said Lathrop.

Maclin refused to talk to officers after he was arrested,
said Lathrop.

Maclin, who was in Madison for the WIAA State Boys
Basketball Tournament, was tentatively charged with two
counts of driving a stolen vehicle and one count each of
recklessly endangering safety and obstructing a police
officer. He remained in the Dane County Jail Friday night.
