Man dies after crashing stolen squad car

A Crisp County man died after crashing a sheriff's squad car he stole when deputies responded to his family's home for a disturbance, Sheriff Donnie Haralson said.

Deputies received a call Friday to go to Spencer Gamble's home north of Cordele where his family said he was causing a disturbance, Haralson said. His family said he was mentally ill, Haralson said.

When a deputy went into the house to talk to him, Gamble left through a back door, and took off in the deputy's car, Haralson said. Haralson said it's not uncommon for a deputy to leave a car on while at a call.

The squad car had a tracking device in it and was located in Dooly County, where deputies there began pursuit, Haralson said. During the chase, Gamble lost control of the vehicle, crashed and was pronounced dead.
