The Coventry man accused of running over one police officer and shooting another in May 2001 was sentenced last week to 20 years in prison.

Jason Guilino, 31, of 328 Merrow Road, Coventry, was originally charged with second-degree assault, assault of a police officer, first-degree larceny and sixth-degree larceny after being stopped in Putnam for questioning in the theft of a bicycle.

While Putnam police Sgt. Robert Kiley stood outside his cruiser questioning Guilino, Guilino was able to get into the driver’s seat and put the cruiser in gear, according to police.

After a struggle with Kiley, Gulion drove off, dragging Kiley under the car.

Gulino drove the cruiser to Woodstock were he crashed it. According to police he flagged down a passing motorist, and stole the car.

He drove to Laurel Drive in Woodstock and attempted to enter several homes, and assaulted an elderly woman after stealing her car keys.

When he was unable to enter the woman’s garage, he fled on foot and jumped into Roseland Lake. Police surrounded the lake and arrested Fulino when he came ashore.

Kiley was treated and released from Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam.

About one week later, Gulino was being transported to Danjelson Superior Court when he broke free of his restraints. During a struggle with police, Gulino shot Putnam police Det. Ricky Hayes in the hand.

As a result, Gulino was charged with criminal attempt at murder, first-degree assault, escape from custody, interfering with a police officer, assault on a police officer and criminal use of a firearm.

Gulino was convicted of first-degree larceny, assault on a police officer, first-degree assault, third-degree assault, third-degree larceny and third-degree burglary.

He was sentenced November 3.
