FORT LAUDERDALE
A high-powered assault rifle was taken from a stolen, unmarked Fort
Lauderdale police car, police said.
The vehicle was stolen from an undisclosed address in Coral Springs early
today and recovered later in the 7000 block of Southgate Boulevard in Tamarac,
said Fort Lauderdale police Sgt. Frank Sousa.
The gun was identified as an semi-automatic AR-15, Sousa said.
Sousa said the department's policy on guns is that they have to be locked and
secured.
He said this gun was locked and secured in the trunk, so the officer did not
violate any policies.
Police are not treating this case differently because a police car was
involved, according to Sousa.
Authorities are investigating this theft as they would any other incident, he
said.
No further details were available.
