Concord, NC - Shoplifting Suspect on the Run - Stole Police Car - Wild Chase - Crashed on US 29

Police in Cabarrus County took two men into custody Wednesday evening after a wild chase in which one suspect allegedly stole a police vehicle.

Police in Concord said they began tailing two suspects after receiving reports of shoplifting at Concord Mills mall. A short time later, police on Interstate 85 spotted a car that had been reported as being stolen. They also saw two men walking along I-85, near the Poplar Tent Road exit.

As police approached, they say the two men tried to run away.

Officers pursued the two into a wooded area. Sometime during the search, police say, one suspect returned to the freeway and jumped into an unmarked police car, driving away on I-85.

The stolen police car was found about 6 miles away, crashed near the U.S. 29/U.S. 601 exit. Police called in the K-9 dog search unit and found the suspect near an apartment dumpster.

Police have not identified the two suspects but say they were wanted by police in Durham
