A teenage girl who told Columbus Police Department officers a group of girls
had attacked her in Sim Scott Park Monday night is charged with stealing a CPD
patrol car and trying to run over her assailants after officers attempted to
quell the disturbance.
Cpl. Donnie Elkin said Antoinette Reane Smith, 18, of 1618 Sixth Ave. N. in
Columbus, told officers a group of 20 girls had started a fight with her in the
park, located in the 900 block of 20th Street North.
When officers arrived on the scene at 6:10 p.m., another disturbance broke out
among the girls and officer Scott Quinn told Smith to wait by the patrol cars.
Elkin said Smith stole Quinn's patrol car and attempted to run down the girls
who had attacked her in the park. Smith wrecked the car into a
chain link fence after driving approximately 100 feet, Elkin said.
Interim Police Chief Joe Johnson said this morning more than a dozen CPD
officers responded to the park and they were joined by officers from the Lowndes
County Sheriff's Office.
“She had gotten into a fight with some young ladies and she took the opportunity
to get them people who had something on her,” Johnson said.
Smith is being held in the Lowndes County Adult Detention Center and is
charged with aggravated assault with a weapon to produce death, along with
taking a motor vehicle - both charges are felony counts.
No bond or preliminary hearing has been set at this time.
