COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - A late night joy ride in a police cruiser lands one man
behind bars. Columbus Police officers on the overnight shift have it hard
enough, but one officer found it even tougher to do his job when someone stole
his police car right out from under him.
A Columbus Police officer was working downtown when reports show that
36-year-old Robert Issacs hopped in the patrol car and took it for a joy ride.
The officer tried to get Issacs out of the car, but the suspect locked the
doors, hit the officer in both knees with the car and took off.
After hitting curbs and dodging pedestrians, two wheels fell off the police
cruiser. Officers ended up stopping Issacs miles from where he took the car, at
the corner of 42nd Street and 2nd Avenue.
Once he was caught, Issacs told police he wanted to run the car into the
Chattahoochee River. His blood alcohol content was point-one-six-three.
Issacs is currently behind bars at the Muscogee County Jail facing charges of
aggravated assault on a police officer, DUI, reckless conduct, theft by taking a
motor vehicle and other traffic violations.
The Columbus Police officer was treated for his injuries and released from the
Medical Center.
