Police arrest area man for allegedly trying to steal police car

(Columbia) August 19, 2006 - A West Columbia man is in jail after being
arrested for trying to steal a police car in Five Points early Saturday morning.
According to the Columbia Police Department, officers responded to a disturbance
in the parking lot of 831 Harden Street at approximately 2:00am. While
officers investigated the disturbance, 22-year-old William Page entered an
unmarked police vehicle and attempted to leave the area.
As officers tried to stop Page, he began driving in their direction. A
Columbia Police officer drew his weapon and fired three rounds in the direction
of the vehicle. Undeterred, Page turned onto Greene Street and then Pavilion
Street. Page then left the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot.
He was apprehended immediately at the 800 block of Pavilion Street.
Officer Harold Caldwell of the Columbia PD has been placed on administrative
leave pending the outcome of an Internal Affairs investigation. SLED has also
been asked to investigate the incident.
There were no injuries, and, according to the Columbia PD, Page has been charged
with the following:
Grand Larceny of a Motor Vehicle
Assault and Battery with Intent to Kill
Two counts of Assault on a Police Officer while Resisting Arrest
Driving under Suspension
Driving under the Influence
