Trusty gets charged in stolen police chase, crash

COLUMBIA, SC -A jail trusty has been charged with several 
crimes in connection with a stolen police car and a chase 
by state troopers that ended in a traffic-knotting crash, 
investigators say.

David Daniel Melton, 37, of Winnsboro, was charged Monday 
with driving under influence, possession of a stolen vehicle 
and having an open container of alcohol, Highway Patrol Lance 
Cpl. Kelley Hughes said.

Winnsboro Public Safety Chief Wayne Yates said Mr. Melton also 
faces charges of grand larceny of a motor vehicle and escape. 
No one was seriously injured in the crash on Interstate 26.
