Patrol car theft ends in recapture
3/6/01
Freedom was brief Monday
night for a 21-year-old Broomfield
man.
Despite handcuffs, Benjamin
Stiles slipped behind the wheel
of a Colorado State Patrol car and
drove off after a trooper stopped
him for speeding near West 71st
Avenue and Federal Boulevard.
During the stop, the officer
discovered what he thought were
drugs, said patrol spokesman Rod
Campbell.
A second trooper tried to stop the
fleeing car by shooting at the tires,
but Stites got away. The patrol car
was found abandoned in Arvada a
short time later, and a police dog
found him hiding in a garage.
