Squad car stolen - Beloit Daily News - Tuesday, Sept. 9, 1997

CHIPPEWA FALLS, Wis. (AP) - A man picked up by police after
a domestic dispute at a tavern drove away in a deputy's patrol
car after his release from jail, a prosecutor told a judge.

"Evidently be lacked transportation home, because he jumped
in Deputy (William) Kelly's car and took off," Ellen Thorson,
Chippewa County assistant district attorney, said Monday.

David E. Markham, 31, of Stanley had been released from
jail just before midnight Saturday night after his arrest due
to an incident with a girlfriend at the Landfill Lounge in the
town of Layette.

Thorson said Markham used the deputy's car to drive to the
Double D Bar in Boyd and told the bartender he had a secret,
revealing he took the squad car. The bartender called authorities
at 1:25 a.m. Sunday, records show.

Officers found the squad car undamaged in Boyd and arrested Markham.

Sheriff Ron Anderson said it is not standard procedure for a deputy
to leave the keys in a vehicle while parked in front of the
sheriffs department, and disciplinary action might be taken.
