CHATTANOOGA -- Investigators used a police dog, a helicopter
and an airplane to track down a man charged with firing gunshots at
an officer during a fight. The suspect also stole a patrol car.
The shots fired about 6 a.m. Tuesday missed the officer's face
and struck his bullet-proof protector. He was not seriously wounded.
Investigators arrested Jeremy Tucker Davis, 25, of Chattanooga
about 1 p.m. Tuesday after a police dog grabbed him by the arm
in a house basement where the owner, after hearing a man cough,
trapped him inside by locking the basement door.
Davis was charged with attempted murder.
Police said the earlier shooting happened when officers
responding to a report of car break-in chased two men on
bicycles. A juvenile was apprehended and an officer fought with
another man who fired at least one shot near the officer's face
and another that struck state arm or he was wearing on his back.
The man who fired the shots then jumped in a patrol car and
attempt to drive away before an officer fired shots in the
windshield. The shots missed the fleeing man but he crashed
the car and ran.
Investigators in a search of several hours called in a helicopter
and a state airplane before receiving a call of a basement intruder.
