Charlotte, NC - Gastonia Police Detective's SUV Carjacked at Gun Point At Accident Scene - Shots Fired - Crash - Caught Fire - Suspect Dead

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Police say a North Carolina man has died after a fiery crash involving a sport utility vehicle he helped carjack from a police officer.

Charlotte police said Friday the incident began when another man was robbed at gunpoint Thursday night in east Charlotte. Two suspects fled in a red Mustang, and police ended a brief chase on Interstate 277 because of excessive speed.

Gastonia police Det. Jim Poole, unaware of the chase, stopped to help a wrecked Mustang on Berkshire Freeway. Police said the suspects took his white SUV at gunpoint.

Poole fired several shots at the SUV, which crashed moments later and caught fire.

Police said 20-year-old Takim Skipper died, but officials didn't say whether from a gunshot or the blaze. The second man, who was not identified, was being questioned Friday.
