Monday, May 3, 2010 at approximately 12:59 a.m., an Appanoose County Deputy Sheriff stopped Chandra Jean Hilty, 33, of Centerville in the intersection of South John and King Street in Moravia for a traffic violation. During the traffic stop the deputy determined that Hilty was operating the motor vehicle while under the influence of an alcholic beverage.

Hilty was arrested for OWI and during the arrest, Hilty resisted arrest. Hilty was subdued and handcuffed. Hilty was placed in the deputy's vehicle. While attending to two other occupants in the vehicle, Hilty manipulated the handcuffs in such a way that allowed her to remove the seatbelt and take possession of the deputy's vehicle.

Hilty drove the patrol vehicle towards the deputy forcing the deputy to jump from the path of the patrol vehicle. Hilty left the area in the patrol vehicle and continued to drive south on Highway 5 from Moravia towards Centerville.

Additional responding deputies and Centerville Police Officers stopped Hilty in the 14000 Block of Highway 5 where she was taken into custody.

Hilty is charged with Theft in the First Degree, Assault on a Peace Officer with a Dangerous Weapon and OWI 2nd Offense.

Hilty is being held in the Appanoose County Jail on $10,000 cash only bond.
