A 19-year-old man briefly gained entry into a Cary police car after fleeing the scene of a one-vehicle crash Monday afternoon, police said.

Charges are pending against Tyler Shaw, of West Dundee, after he fled into the Greenfields subdivision when the vehicle he was driving struck a tree about 2:20 p.m. at the intersection of Cary-Algonquin Road and West Main Street, according to a news release.

When he saw that police had located him, Shaw took off and eventually found the vehicle of one of the three officers involved in the foot pursuit, police said.

As Shaw tried to drive away, one of the officers held the gear shift lever to keep the vehicle in park, said Officer Geoff Witherow of the Cary Police Department.

Shaw was taken to the Cary Police Department and later transported to Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington, according to the release.

Witherow said no alcohol appeared to be involved in the incident. It is unknown why Shaw fled the scene of the crash.
