A 43-year-old Cartersville man remains in custody at the Bartow County Jail after his arrest by Cartersville police on 16 individual charges.
Rual S. Elder, of 38 Old Springs Place Road, was stopped by a Cartersville police officer shortly after 10 p.m., May 5, on North Tennessee Street.
The patrol officer pulled over the white Ford Tempo Elder was driving because it allegedly didn't have a license plate.
But after placing the Cartersville man under arrest on a vast array of charges, bystanders hollered that Elder had gotten into the front seat of the police cruiser and began driving off with it.
The suspect lost control of the patrol car, hitting the Tempo Elder was driving.
The officer tried in vain to wrest the steering wheel from Elder, but at first was trapped between the cruiser and the white Ford.
Elder then allegedly crashed the police car into Cowboys' storefront.
