Canton, TX - Inmate Steals Van Zantd Sheriff's Police Truck from Detective with Multiple Assault Weapons

CANTON, Texas -- An East Texas inmate made a getaway after jumping behind the wheel of the police pickup that was transporting him.

Authorities say David Lee Sprague was in the back seat of a Van Zandt County vehicle Thursday when the detective who was driving stepped out of the truck to talk with someone. Sprague apparently hopped into the driver's seat and sped away. Authorities caught up with the vehicle a time later and returned Sprague to custody.

The truck was equipped with multiple weapons, including an assault rifle, the Tyler Morning Telegraph reported.

"I have certainly had better days than this one," Van Zandt County Sheriff Pat Burnett said.
