CANTON, S.D. - A man who stole a deputy sheriff's patrol car south of Sioux Falls was sentenced to five years in prison for escape and grand theft.

Authorities said Shane Ridenour, 34, of Omaha, Neb., was stopped for a traffic violation in Lincoln County last July. A deputy discovered there was an outstanding arrest warrant for Ridenour, so he was handcuffed behind his back and placed in the patrol car's back seat.

Somehow Ridenour managed to work his handcuffs to the front of his body, got into the driver's seat and drove off. He was chased and apprehended in Sioux Falls.
