One suspect who stole an unmarked Cannon sheriff's investigator's car remains at large after wrecking the car, fighting with the investigator and escaping into a wooded area Monday, Sheriff Billy Nichols reported.

The department's SWAT team and Tennessee Bureau of Investigation agents were searching late Monday for Bobby Vaughn who is in his mid-20s and lives on Halls Hill Pike in Rutherford County, the sheriff reported.

A 16-year-old Rutherford County teen, who is wanted on unrelated charges, is in custody where charges are pending.

Investigator Roy Sullivan spotted a van occupied by the two males Monday afternoon. The license plate didn't match the van.

When he turned on the blue lights, the males in the van took off. Reserve Deputy Grady George, who is in the Mounted Patrol unit, was almost hit by the suspects during the chase at Auburntown bridge.

The suspects hit a bridge abutment, blew out a tire and crashed into a ditch near Locke Creek Road near Westside School. Sullivan and Sgt. Landon Pence chase the suspects. Vaughn struck Sullivan, causing him to fall down a ravine. Sullivan was checked for injuries at Stones River Medical Center.

Vaughn stole Sullivan's unmarked patrol car.

"Roy fires six times at him," Nichols reported.

Vaughn wrecked the car in a field about one mile away and ran.

Deputies from Cannon, Coffee and DeKalb counties and Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers searched for the suspect along with tracking dogs from Cannon, the THP and citizen Stacy Elder.
They called off the search later Monday.

Investigators learned Vaughn was a convicted criminal with "a lot of violent felonies." His parole officer reported Vaughn was supposed to be in prison but was released early.

People with information about Vaughn are asked to call the Cannon County Sheriff's Department at 563-4322 or Rutherford County Sheriff's Office at 898-7770.
