An arrest in Buchanan County Sunday ended with a sheriff's deputy shooting out a tire in his own vehicle after a suspect stole it.
Two deputies responded to a disturbance call near Lake Contrary Sunday night. That's where they arrested a man on a warrant.
According to Sheriff Mike Strong, deputies handcuffed the suspect and placed him in the front seat of the patrol vehicle. Sheriff Strong says the man was also restrained with a seatbelt.
As the deputies searched another car on the property, Sheriff Strong says the man was able to free himself from the seatbelt and step over the handcuffs. He got into the driver's seat of the deputy's 4x4 patrol vehicle and took off.
A deputy fired a shot at the vehicle and flattened a tire, bringing it to a stop not far from the scene, where the man was taken into custody again.
Sheriff Strong says the patrol vehicle does have video cameras, but they were not on at the time. The outside camera is triggered when the lights and sirens are turned on. They were not on in this case. The inside camera has to be turned on as well.
Sheriff Strong says the man was properly handcuffed at the time of the initial arrest with steel cuffs behind his back. He said he stepped over the cuffs after freeing himself from the seatbelt.
The Sheriff's Department has launched an internal investigaiton to review the arrest and figure out how the man was able to pull off the getaway.
The Sheriff's Department is turning the case over to prosecutor's office for possible charges against the suspect involved.
