Charges are pending against a Browns Valley man after police say he assaulted an officer and stole his squad car.

Traverse County Sheriff Don Montonye says the incident happened over the weekend after a disturbance at a street dance in Browns Valley.

The sheriff says Browns Valley Police Chief Randy Huckeby was taking the 24-year-old man to a holding facility in Wheaton, when the man kicked out both rear windows of the squad car, jumped out, assaulted Huckeby and took off in the police car.

He drove a short distance before rolling the car in the ditch.

Authorities say the man then took the car of another man who stopped to help him and crashed that car, too.
